That's where we slept, a place they loved: Julie's Guesthouse Very "backpacker" atmosphere, the colors are everywhere and the prices unbeatable. We paid 4.50 Euros per night with breakfast. Really charming, and more, well placed. http://www.julieguesthouse.com/
Chiang Mai is a very nice city full of richeness.
Then Khao Lak on the coast to take diving lessons. City without interest, on a roadside. Some restaurants, some shopping.
Great opportunity: Starting point for diving in the Similan islands 60 km away from the coast (near the border with Burma).Similan islands:
Heaven on earth. Most of these islands are uninhabited, protected ... where everything is green and blue.
These islands are among the 10 most beautiful diving spots in the world ... A giant aquarium, fish galore of all colors, all sizes; After classes in the pool, the luxury. Turtles, barracuda, clown fish, parrot fish etc etc ... Unbelievable. Visibility to 20m. Better go for 2 days minimum.Good experience with Similan Scuba Adventures (PADI). Very good diving teachers, delicious meals on the boat, great atmosphere. http://www.similan-scuba.com/
Railay
In Railay, no car or scooter. It is like an island and you have to go to any place by foot or by long-tail boat. (This isa place surrounded by lush mountains landlocked too steep to be able to move except by boats).
Everything is sublime, you just learn to escape from other tourists who are gathering all the same places, in front of their luxury resort. Here is paradise, passing from one beach to another by roads surrounded by lush gardens, or near the caves and mountains with patches of stone. The sea is an indescribable color pulling emerald. In the distance, yet the same sort of huge rocks that you see in the famous James Bond.
Here is the corner of climbers, many are here to climb with their bag of manganese shaped like a small cat.

We loved eating at Mom's Kitchen in East Railay. By far the best and warmest corner of the restaurants, run by an exceptional woman. The view is too: in front of the mangrove ...
For accommodation: it is very cheap for price / quality ratio, we went a few nights at the Diamond Cave, sublime for ONLY 22 euros per night in 2008.
A little advice: better to find accommodation in Railay East near the mangroves: the best value for money, less tourists acting like "red whales on the beach", more authentic. After that, to move from one place to another, go from Railay East to Railay West, the walk is fairly short and so pleasant...
