SLOVENIA

Slovenia Drapeau de la Slovénie is a large country like Britain (20 273 km2, with 2 million inhabitants), and the scenery is very varied. It is located between Italy, Austria, Croatia and Hungary.
Slovenia has 4 different types of landscapes:
  • The mountain area (Julian Alps in the north-west)
  • The flat area (north-east)
  • The karst area (west of the country: Postojna karst cave and its incredible, and its LipicaLipizzaner horses, the valley of the Brda)
  • The Slovenian coast which is 40 km, Italian style.
In less than two hours, the landscape changes ... This is the main positive point of Slovenia, especially for travel.

The Slovenian mountains are a veritable paradise for professional climbers and for trekking enthusiasts or week-end hikers. You can easily find some cottages or mountain hotels where you can sleep and eat.

The Julian Alps
North - north-east, near the Austrian border, are the Julian Alps: mountains, forests, turquoise rivers, waterfalls, springs. The country is covered by forest 57%, which ranks third in forested country in Europe.
Its peak, Triglav (pronounced Triglao) amounts to 2874m.

Soča River (pronounced Socha), protected, is an incredible milky blue. It flows in the west to Triglav, Bovec, and north-eastern Italy.

Bled

Bled is a magical place, with a lake of great beauty, but quite touristy and less wild thanLake Bohinj. (see below)To enjoy the best view on Lake Bled, you have to go up the hill, by the castle. (entrance fee butessential!)
Once up, you have a wonderful view on this beautiful lake in the middle of which rests a round island like a cake with a candlethe steeple of the church. Marriages are celebrated here.
You can rent a small boat and sail around the island.

At the castle you can admire the view, eat, drink a glass or enjoy a show about the history of Bled in the Middle Ages if you're lucky.

You can also print your name or other words on a Gutenberg printing press. The printer, dressed as the Middle Ages will be happy to teach you how to use this printing. This cellar is typically very small, dark, metal letters neatly arranged along the walls.

You can have a guide to visit the castle: you will surely be surprised by the quality of the visit.

In the cellar of the castle, a (false) monk you will receive and you will perhaps enjoy the local wines: very good dry white wines for example!

Down, in Bled, you can go around the lake, observe many white swans, rent a boat, have a drink on the terrace and enjoy many other activities.

4 km north of Bled, you can visit the gorge Vintgar on the river Radovna, they are really worth because they reveal much of rapids and waterfalls. A footpath has been built in 1893.

Bohinj

Another lake (Lake Bohinj), very clean and in which one bathes in the summer ... magnificent wilderness ...
Here you can relax in the secluded valleys, making treks, or enjoy the many leisure activities and yet discreet for those who do not wish to do use them.
Possible activities revolve around the canoe, you can also take a boat trip on the lake, horse ride, rent bikes, mountain climbing or paragliding, rafting or be lulled by massage ... Here, you can not get bored and at the same time enjoying nature in his lungs.

A small ski resort (Vogel) allows you to live your passion while having a breathtaking view of Lake Bohinj.

Another interesting and intermittent lake:
Lake CERKNIŠKO jezero disappears when water is scarce in summer. It is located inthe Karst region. A lake ideal for fishing, fish is abundant.

Piran is a city that will remind you of Venice. She was italian a few years ago. You can feel it while observing the architecture. This small town is a gem. Located on the Adriatic coast, you can swim in the warm sea, but still somewhat cloudy. Here, no real beach, like the rest of the Eastern Adriatic coast. Pontoons will allow you to immerse yourself safe.

Piran is a city full of tourists in summer.

Ljubljana

One of my favorite cities. A human-sized capital (280,000 inhabitants), a superb architecture and completely refurbished, small cafes everywhere, places, terraces... a river running through the city center, a monumental market ... we necessarily want to stroll in Ljubljana! And we want to return as soon as possible.

Ljubljana is a city of culture, it has many festivals each year (International Film Festival (LIFFe), a large music festival (Druga Godber), museums, libraries, and many other interesting things!

This city combines the past present and future with a special elegance. In older homes, there are very modern shops, restaurants design that have nothing to envy to the rest of Western Europe, all in compliance with the architectural traditions. Ljubljana, I adopt it immediately. Besides, I'm not the only one to love ... Tourists flock more and more each year.

This waterfall is spectacular! The scenery around is enchanting and give you enough green in the eye for the next winter. The river in Pericnik is called Bistrica.

Slovenian cuisine
In Slovenia, the food is delicious and varied and if you're lucky enough to be received within a family, they will be delighted to offer you the best dishes. Entertaining is an art in Slovenia, their sense of hospitality that is incredibly developed and admirable!

The food is different in each region. On the coast, the food is typically Mediterranean. In the mountains the dishes are a little more hearty, with lots of meat. But with globalization, food is becoming more mixed. In big cities you will find many foreign restaurants (Ljubljana, Maribor).

Traditional dishes: The Žganci, pasta stuffed with cheese, meat or vegetables. They are rolled and cooked in boiling water and serve as an accompaniment to meat.

Zganci, image wikipedia
Other dishes: fried eggplant, pie schtruddle, Knedel (Bohemian dumplings), goulashand many other dishes. They love huge decorated cakes.
The Slovenian do not eat at the same hours as the French. If you are invited into a familyyou may feel "disturbed"! They do not always eat at the same hours, sometimes lunch can take place at 16h, sometimes at noon, depending on their hours of work. Dinner may not occur if the lunch was late and hearty, or you can have dinner a very few hours after a BIG lunch. And in any case, we eat a lot and it's good.

Writing and pronouncing in Slovenian:

Throughout the Balkans, it is impossible to make spelling mistakes as you write phonetically, you just have to know the accents on the letters not to be ridiculous.
Č is pronounced "tch"
Š is pronounced "ch"
Ž pronounce "j" as in "Jasper"
J is pronounced like the "y" of "year"
G is pronounced "gu" as the "gu" "guitar"
C is pronounced "ts"
